Culture Spaces \\ Kunsthaus Tacheles

2013-02-05_002119-

This is (not) a story from a time long ago

”As soon as the Berlin Wall opened, an artists activist group reclaimed the site  as a cultural hub in the newly reunified city, taking it over..

Kunsthaus Tacheles

..they chose the name Tacheles for its location in the former Jewish quarter, after a Yiddish word meaning ‘to reveal’ or ‘to bring to a close’..

2013-02-05_005544

..this project by the group, Künstlerinitative Tacheles (Artists Initiative Tacheles), spread so quickly that the city government adopted a policy of leniency and delayed demolition by declaring the site a historic landmark..

Bridge in Tacheles

..artists signed a ten year lease in 1998 with owner Johannishof GmBH, but by the time it expired, ownership had been transferred to HSH Nordbank, extremely eager to remove the artists altogether..

2013-02-05_005942

..meanwhile, the building was painted in bright colors and held several sculptures using found objects . Tacheles held a cinema, performance space, workshops, and exhibition spaces..

2013-02-05_003639

About 400,000 tourists visited the site last year for a taste of the carefree past of Berlin, when artists flocked to former East Berlin for cheap rents and anything felt possible in the reunified city. ”

2013-02-05_013315HINT:’the property stands on a site about three times the size of the one occupied by New York’s Empire State Building.’(that’s a clue!)

SAMSARA Theatrical Trailer

SAMSARA will be in theaters across the USA August 24th.

For full theater and international release dates visit barakasamsara.com/theaters

ABOUT SAMSARA:

Prepare yourself for an unparalleled sensory experience. SAMSARA reunites director Ron Fricke and producer Mark Magidson, whose award-winning films BARAKA and CHRONOS were acclaimed for combining visual and musical artistry.

SAMSARA is a Sanskrit word that means “the ever turning wheel of life” and is the point of departure for the filmmakers as they search for the elusive current of interconnection that runs through our lives. Filmed over a period of almost five years and in twenty-five countries, SAMSARA transports us to sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial sites, and natural wonders. By dispensing with dialogue and descriptive text, SAMSARA subverts our expectations of a traditional documentary, instead encouraging our own inner interpretations inspired by images and music that infuses the ancient with the modern.

Expanding on the themes they developed in BARAKA (1992) and CHRONOS (1985), SAMSARA explores the wonders of our world from the mundane to the miraculous, looking into the unfathomable reaches of man’s spirituality and the human experience. Neither a traditional documentary nor a travelogue, SAMSARA takes the form of a nonverbal, guided meditation. Through powerful images, the film illuminates the links between humanity and the rest of nature, showing how our life cycle mirrors the rhythm of the planet.

Inside Coney Island’s Decrepit Movie Palace

Two years ago the Shore Theater in Coney Island (formally the Loew’s Coney Island) was declared an historic landmark. Well, its exterior was. The inside of the former vaudeville and movie palace was left to fend to itself, as it has been doing since the 1970s. Despite the theater’s dominating presence in Coney Island’s amusement area, the interior has been pretty much lost to the public. Until now.

Photographer Matt Lambros of After The Final Curtain recently got into the theater and has just posted his pictures online: the Renaissance revival space is, like so many old theaters, truly stunning even in its decrepitude. The architects at Reilly & Hall knew what they were doing when they designed the space in the 1920s (the theater opened June 17, 1925 and after many iterations closed for good in March of 1973).

”I’m addicted to imagery and I believe that equipment does matter. I believe that self-esteem is built on compliments, but self-development on criticism. both the world itself and the weather is my inspiration.”

Reconstructed Works[US] by Pep Vendosa

Times Square

”recognized in the International Photography Awards, these images were each created using dozens to several hundred separate photographs. Originally shot in fragments, the puzzle pieces were then reconstructed one by one and reworked to create a unique narrative space that never actually happened, where the whole travels mysteriously further than what the camera documented. Part memory, part imagination, not unlike the way we see.”
