Greater Tower for London [1890]

 - archive play for now with some uber-rare design sketches -

In 1890 some English have found that the Eiffel Tower had become an important asset for France and for Paris, noting in passing that his visitors had already reported more than the cost of its construction only during the Expo, and so they decided embarking on the construction of a tower at least as important in London.

To this end they organized a design competition to select the shape that this tower should have, there were 68 responses from across solutions with more or less inventive.

Monika Grzymala // Fucking up da space

“Artist Monika Grzymala has created this dramatic installation, made entirely with black tape, within the Sumarria Lunn gallery in London.

The show sees Grzymala take over the entire gallery with the installation, changing the way visitors interact with the space. It is the latest in a series of site-specific tape installations by the artist, who has previously exhibited at galleries including MoMA New York, the Tokyo Art Museum and the Drawing Room in London.”

The FG team approves these cute random artist fucking up the space, the hardcore way, the only way!

London Festival of Architecture 2012 in Fitzrovia

‘The Playful City’ is the theme for this year’s London Festival of Architecture, running from 23 June – 8 July 2012.

From reinterpreting familiar places through new installations and animations, redesigning public spaces to encourage physical fitness in the spirit of the Olympic Games, to testing interactive forms of consultation and planning for future urban development, festival participants will be encouraged to play in, and play with, the city around them.

Fitzrovia is one of the focus areas for the festival with lots of great activities happening on the middle weekend – Saturday 30 June and Sunday 1 July. RIBA London, a regional office of the Royal Institute of British Architects, has been working with local architectural practices and organisations to curate this Fitzrovia hub which will include free events for family audiences.

Now, we all know that we are not so in fond of SciArc and their tactics but we have to admit it when we see something we actually like. Figuring on the top, and only entry, of the UP category this random chinese dude, who DISSOBEYED his tutors instructions to FULLY PARAMETRISIZE his project, amd had the balls to use his Photoshop skillz for once in that school…No need to say this guy failed his semester…lolzz

-like bringing knives to a gunfight..wa?-

Unfortunately the most interesting articles lately on dezeen are the mixtape articles from five years ago…

THIS IS GETTING PHAKING ANNOYING!

DOWN #2

STARCHITECTS.

So, what up with our so precious idols…?no, seriously…

Zaha is like trying to boost her popularity through random design fairs( last she was spotted at Milan’s Design Fair, being interviewed by a random chinese dezeen intern…’nuff said), Gehry is still locked in his private room, having an eye-to-eye showdown with a koutsomoura*(scroll down to see what koutsomoura means) in order to find inspiration, and The BIG is still playing his ball-even though his playing volleyball with tennis balls…- and Rem has gone guerilla, withdrawn in russia and launching his strategic operations, undercover mode.

FG TIP 2 STARCHITECTS:

guys, hire an image consultant, new 3d monkeys, more hot secretaries…

And for the end, another classical case of

Fragile ◆ The Big Egg Hunt // by BREAD

I imagine most of you are familiar at this point with the “Big Egg Hunt” that took place in London [not really sure if its still on]

Here is a great entry by Bread who brought some top class digital fabrication atmosphere with their Egg.

“Fragile was a pretty daunting construct, fabricated from just over 1 Kilogramme of selectively laser sintered nylon – donated and manufactured by the DMC - thats quite a small amount of material for an elliptical volume over 750mm tall and 450mm wide. Not to mention that the majority of elements are just a few millimetres thick. Due to its complexity, the shape had to be split into separate shells which were assembled in a negative mould. Each shell was joined by ‘tapping’ using a soldering iron (not all to dissimilar from how you would locate metal panels for welding) and then fixed with epoxy resin.

It’s always difficult to appreciate how the complexity one can create in the digital realm will manifest in the physical, so it was a rather nerve racking process watching the egg take shape. Suffice it to say, everyone was pretty pleased with the final result.”
